Academic Advisor - College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts

The College of Architecture, Design and the Arts (CADA) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is seeking a full-time Academic Advisor. This position acts as the first point of contact for current and prospective CADA students to provide academic, career and personal counseling in coordination with the advising team. The incumbent assists with development and implementation of academic, career and student affairs programs involving outreach to internal and external constituencies including prospective and admitted students, alumni, high school and community agencies. Please note the salary range for this position is $38,000-43,000 annual.


Student Advisement

  • As the first point of contact, assess student needs and refer them to appropriate individuals forcounselingand advisement on academic, career and personal issues and develop individualacademic and career goals. Identify educational and career options appropriate for each studentand assist with the analysis of each option, including possible outcomes and their implications.
  • Assist students with course selection, study abroad, university requirements, financial aid and scholarship choices.
  • Process, track and report on student advising activities including advising notes, student petitions,transfer course evaluation, grade audit, probation, dismissal, graduation clearance and monitor andreport on success of assigned students.
  • Refer students to counseling and services provided by other campus support units.
  • Assess students’ interests, skills and goals related to career development; provide specializedacademic advising, resume review and personal counseling to students from diverse backgroundsand cultural differences to guide the student to graduation.
  • Assess the student's stage of development (academic, career, and personal) and determine suitabledevelopmental tasks; assist student in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals.
  • Communicate with faculty and departmental administrators on behalf of students; provide resourcereferral for external issues that may affect matriculation.
  • Support CADA Student Organizations by encouraging student participation, foster involvement inorganizations and attend events related to the academic, community, career and professionaldevelopment of business students.


Student Outreach and Recruitment

  • Promote and implement student initiatives and programs, including outreach to internaland external constituencies of alumni, high schools and community agencies, with the goal ofrecruitment and retention of targeted population students.
  • Collaborate with academic partners, parents, alumni and other constituents in developing activitiesthat strengthen student education, using a variety of student development theories and practices.
  • Plan and implement orientation initiatives.


Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications: 

A Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Counseling or related field is required. A Master’s degree preferred.

Strong knowledge of student development theory and academic programming. Working knowledge of university academic policies, federal guidelines regarding financial aid, academic records, college entrance procedures and available student resources.

A minimum of 3 years experience in higher education student learning, counseling or related. Proficient in Microsoft Office products -Word, Excel

Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work with diverse populations;demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to socio- ethnic and cultural communication styles.
